The Bride Wore Black

On Christmas Eve almost 97 years ago, my grandparents were married in a simple home ceremony. The bride wore black. It was quite a surprise to me the first time I heard it until she explained that it was the custom in her city at the time. Besides, she added, she would wear the dress again.

So it seemed quite natural to me when my husband and I were married four years ago to do the same thing, especially because it was not the first marriage for either of us. We were married in a simple ceremony in our home, by a dear friend, an Episcopalian priest. The bride wore black, of course.

When the topic, weddings, was chosen for the Etsy Bloggers Carnival, it was a story I had to share! The photo above is from our wedding, but as I look just like my grandmother, it was almost a step back to that simpler time, 97 years ago. I guess that happy marriages do not come from the color of the wedding dress....black, white, or any other color!

What about you? What color was your wedding dress?

What a great story :) If I ever get married, my dress won't be traditional either. And it will be a simple ceremony at our home as well :)

happiness definitely doesn't come from the dress color...or the wedding for that matter...it's the marriage that counts :)

My dress was ivory & champagne :)

How lovely to have those memories, and to be connected through time by the color of your wedding dresses.

My sweetie and I are coming up on 20 years of second marriage. My gown was a deep green satin and velvet; his was plaid. (Just my teensy joke--the groom wore a kilt!)

I wore ivory. I think your story is so sweet and special. I think that the simple traditions bind generations. I put wedding photos of my grandparents and parents as well as my hubbies on the mantle at my reception. I thought it was special to include everyone who is near and dear to us. Nice job!

My wedding and reception were simple. I wore a white dress that my cousin had worn in her wedding. I added a blue band around the waist.

How wonderful to see that so many of you chose unique colors as well as the beautful, traditional white!
