Naming Teeth; More Winter Survival

I'm thinking of naming my teeth. Now before you think I'm crazier than I really am, I didn't come up with the idea first. It comes from a character in one of my favorite TV show, NCIS. In an episode a while ago Abby had named her teeth. What got me thinking of it again, was some considerable dental work that I'm dealing with right now. And since I'm down to 31 teeth after Monday, maybe it's time to identify with each one a little more. Also winter gives me more time to think of such silly things.

So, it's time to think of names whether I go ahead with this system or not. At first I thought of "honoring" friends and family, but that would mean selecting certain people and not selecting others and I don't want them to be "insulted"! Then I contemplated naming them after places I love, but that is a little impersonal. I'm leaning now to naming them after some of my favorite literary characters that can't come back to haunt me. Obviously, I'd love to tell you that I'm writing this "tongue in cheek", but my cheek is still sore so I can't do that!

So if you have any ideas for me, feel free to let me know!

Another Way to Survive the Winter; the Winter Survival Kit 4

To each his own! David has decided that our living room carpet is a great putting green. So now our front room has a putter, a mock golf hole, and several golf balls as part of its decor. For everyone who knows us, it is not surprising, as he just loves golfing and a Wisconsin winter is not conducive to much golfing. I figure that as long as he is enjoying himself and I know exactly where he is, this is a great winter survival technique!

A Day of Guilty Pleasures; Winter Survival Kit 3

I'm still stuck, but that's OK! Today was truly a day of guilty pleasures. As it was a late night last night, I got to sleep in again; this time until after 8:00. What a treat!! We enjoyed a great breakfast of eggs Benedict and after a little computer work, I settled in to the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times crossword puzzles. As usual, one was much easier, but as you can see, I'll need to take another go at this one tomorrow morning when I'm fresh!

The greeting cards begun yesterday are now finished as far as I can get without buying more tape, and this year's anniversary cards are now designed, but that was the end of most activity other than a load of wash, because our dear neighbors called to ask if it was OK to bring over a pot of chili for an early supper and enjoy the football games with us. And what a pleasant afternoon and evening it was!

Now it's quiet here and I'm indulging in more guilty pleasure by watching

Downton Abbey. I must admit it has me hooked with a great story line and superb acting!

Second Great Day! Winter Survival Kit #2

You may not want to look too carefully at this picture if you regularly receive a snail mail birthday card from us! The first cards of the year were hot off the press this morning. At least nine of them are completed and nine more are ready to be assembled. You're seeing the three colors I've chosen: shades of coral, lavender, and aqua blue.

The 6:00am dip in the pool must have given me the energy! We are fortunate to have a beautiful workout facility here in Kohler called the Sports Core. Besides many classes, workout rooms and

tennis courts it features two pools, a lap pool and a family pool. Being a very cold blooded critter, I choose the warmer family pool for water aerobics and visits with Sports Core friends.

After breakfast and reading the papers, I assembled all the lovely colored papers, stamps, and inks so I could begin designing. The above combo was based on an adaptation of a card I had seen before, but I added some new elements and they turned out quite differently. Tomorrow I hope to design three more and complete those started today.

Dinner was actually nostalgic for me as I made potato pancakes, an old recipe that was taught to me by my paternal grandmother. It isn't actually a recipe I guess, as she taught me by how the ingredients look and feel as they're mixed. I was so pleased to have mastered it as my mom did not like them and preferred not to make them, so after Grandma passed away I could make them for Dad as a real treat.

The clean up did not take long, giving me time to finish my book and get my nap in before an easy supper. Then it was a quick hop next door to babysit while her Mom and Dad stepped out for the evening. She's such a delightful baby and so easy to enjoy. I got quite a kick out of her hitting her plastic golf ball with her little plastic clubs! I also started a new winter hat for her as she has outgrown the ones from last year.

What a great day! There's only the coffee pot to set up and the bakery to raise before the warm, wonderful bed will call.

Winter Survival Kit

Isn't this the best way to survive winter?? Our darling little neighbor went sledding for the first time in her life and loved it!! Winter, however, is the bane of my existence. Living in Wisconsin, there are few choices other than enjoying it or coping with it, and as hard as I try to choose the first option, it never seems to work.

Winter arrived a little later this year, thank goodness, and that gave me time to develop a new approach.  I'm...chronicling my days until spring (which to me means no more snow and high temps at least in the 40's) to see if they really are as bad as I think at the time. I hope to be pleasantly surprised!

Today really did start out rather nicely. David let me sleep until almost 7:00, just in time check email and to slip into some very warm clothes (it was below zero at the time) and head out for the weekly breakfast with three other couples. As we tend to have a great deal of fun at these events, we choose different restaurants so the same place doesn't have to put up with our nonsense week after week.

This morning the conversations ran from the frustrating to the hilarious. The frustrating was hearing that the Sheboygan middle school teachers are each going to have to pay $50.00 of their own money to insure the I Pads that the school system has purchased and mandated for every student. Because all of us are retired teachers or spouses of retired teachers, that was hard to swallow.

Good thing that breakfast was not! This particular restaurant serves Swedish pancakes with lingonberries which is one of my favs and the hilarious conversations covered everything from different types of honey produced by bees who pollinate different flowers to remodeled bathrooms.   I'll leave it to your imagination to imagine the on and off color jokes that followed.

Then we tackled one of our least favorite chores, the semi-monthly trip to Wal-Mart to pick up items that are definitely less expensive there I'm pleased to say we survived without David getting too impatient when I can't find things.

Then it was back home to put items away, sweep the sidewalk salt away that we had been tracking in the last couple of days, do a load of laundry, unload the dishwasher and check our mail and Mom's mail. That left me an hour to continue my new book, In the Garden of Beasts, by Erik Larson the author of The Devil in the White City. It deals with the Ambassador to Germany in the early 1930's at the time of Hitler's rise to power. I'm finding it fascinating and a great review of that period of history. Also it provided great dinner time conversation!

Good thing dinner was quickly prepared (we eat our big meal between noon and one) thanks to great leftover enchiladas. Even clean up was a breeze. That left time for playing a few internet games and read more before my afternoon nap. Now let me do a little explaining here. I do get a little more than 8 hours sleep a day, but I do it in shifts....about 6 1/2 hours at night and almost 2 most afternoons, a great pattern for someone almost 70 years old. Even more reading was on the docket while David cleaned up the snow that had fallen this afternoon.

After a quick supper, which I have to admit included some great blueberry pie, we got comfy in the den and watched a little mindless TV,   The only crafting today was making seven scrubbies completed at this time. Guess it's really time to get cracking on my crafts and Etsy shop which has been in the doldrums after the holiday. Perhaps tomorrow will bring more inspiration!

If you've lasted this long through a rather personal and uneventful day, I have the feeling you are thinking, "That's a pretty good life", and I must admit it is! Even writing this has made my winter mood more mellow!

So I'll post this blog, finish my book, and as Samuel Pepys would say, "And So to Bed"!

Ringing in the new year

Christmas at our house is all about celebrating with family. But when it comes to the new year, friends become the center of the holiday. Each year we look forward to going out to dinner with a large group of friends at a favorite local restaurant. That is followed by a late night party and another one the next day, so it is really a two day New Year's celebration. One year I even overheard one of our friends claim that it is the best 48 hours of the year! Happy New Year to all our friends and family!

Down to Five Days

and there isn't going to be enough time! I'm sure I'll still be finishing set up and even an item or two on Friday morning, the day of the sale. Today the elephant and five double scrubbies were completed. The only complication, and a pleasant one at that, was that three orders came in, so that takes away several items and there will be packing and shipping tomorrow. So, in addition to that, my goals are more double scrubbies , beginning the tagging, at whipping up a new hat.

Here's one of the items that sold today. There won't be time to remake these!!

Just six days...

One of the very practical products at our upcoming sale is a set of unusual jar openers. The soft, rubbery centers are very gentle on hands and offer a great grip. They're also available individually at just $2.00 each.

Goals for tomorrow include finishing the amigurmi elephant, cutting the final 8 yards of netting and starting the double layer scrubbies. Hope I'm as successful tomorrow as I was today!

One more week!

Whew!! Just finished a hippopotamus!! He came on the heels of 12 scrubbies and a new beanie cap...so all but some organization was completed today.

Above is a thank you note that will be offered at the craft sale next weekend, but it's also to thank all of you who have been following this series of blog posts.

Tomorrow's challenge is another dozen scrubbies, the organizing that should have been done today, and the start of an elephant...big tusks...oops...tasks (can you tell I'm getting sillier by the minute?)

Just Eight More Days!

One week from tomorrow is the first day of our craft show here in Kohler. Publicity is continuing, projects are being completed, and we're staying positive about the weather forecasts!

Goals set yesterday were completed about an hour ago I'm focusing on three items for tomorrow:

10 scrubbies

Sorting completed crochet projects

Making a hippopotamus

Fortunately the hippo is only about 10" long. He's shown with his pachyderm buddy in the photo above. Both are part of an amigurumi zoo that will be on sale next week. They both were completed but sold last week!

Nine more days to go!

Wow, time is flying! Happy to say that yesterday's goals were met and after a "WigWam" shopping trip tomorrow, I hope to make 10-12 more greeting cards, finish another baby hat and complete another dozen scrubbies.

The "Thinking of You" note cards and some similar thank you notes will be available at our show in nine days. We're hoping for better weather than we had today, which included a ton of rain and at least an inch of snow!

Ten More Days of Challenge

I'm happy to report that my goals for today have been met, even though it means some very sore fingers! The scrubbies I made today are all the plain round ones, but here are a couple of wreath scrubbies that will be for sale at our sale next weekend and in my Etsy shop. They make great stocking stuffers or package tie ons. They're made of the same tough nylon net and just as good for cleaning up everything from dishes to car hoods once the decorative ribbon is removed.

So for tomorrow the new goals are: 12 more scrubbies, 20 greeting cards and finishing the baby Santa hat. Unfortunately, as hard as I try, this will not be able to excuse me from doing some cleaning...there's never an end to that!

Here's the first update!

Today was busy, but things worked out well. All goals were accomplished except for 2 jar openers. In addition, the friend that will be adding her jewelery to the sale stopped over to show me the cute earrings that she and her daughters made. She'll also help with publicity and make the outdoor signs we'll need. That will be a big help!

So for tomorrow I'll aim to finish a dozen scrubbies while I'm baby sitting...above you'll see the little cutie modelling one of the baby hats that will be in the sale. Also, I hope to pick up some last minute supplies and continue working on the Santa hat as well as finishing the last two jar openers.

A Twelve Day Challenge

In just 12 days, my friend, Judy, and I are hosting a craft show here at our home and the challenges are looming! We've begun to publicize, we are amassing our completed crafts, and are finishing many more. So I'm setting goals for each day. Let's see how I do!

First, to keep me more organized, I'll post about this time each evening until the big event, November 18 and 19. My efforts became a little more complicated due to several Etsy sales. I'm certainly not complaining, but now it means I'll have to make an extra amigurumi elephant and rhino as well as a baby Santa hat.

Today I had aimed to finish some quick shopping at Joann's for fabric, card stock and ribbon. The latter were easy, but I had to order the fabric at a greater cost. That was the only setback, however. My goal of 24 scrubbies to complete sets such as shown above were accomplished thanks to many uninterrupted hours as we watched pro football (Go Packers).

Tomorrow, the following items are on the docket:

Make 10 more scrubbies.
Mail packages.
Edge six jar openers.
Design several greeting cards.
Start a new baby Santa hat.

Of course, all this is in and around our regular Monday schedule.

The glorious summer garden flowers actually inspired me to add to my ever increasing scrubbie selections on Etsy and when Etsy Bloggers asked us to share a summer craft, I chose these flower scrubbie sets. They come as a set of six as shown in these photos, and also in sets of two.

For those of you who crochet, here's a quick how-to for the flower scrubbies:
Cut 8 yards of nylon netting into 3" strips. You'll get quite a few out of 8 yard pieces in two colors.

With a J or K hook, Ch 3, join with slip stitch.
Row 1: Work 6 sc in loop.
Row 2: Work 2 sc in each sc.
Row 3: Work 2 sc in each sc. Join with sl st.
Row 4: Ch 3, skip next sc, sc in next sc around. Finish off.

For anyone who crochets, it's super simple! With a little expert help it's even a great beginner project. Enjoy!!

Summer Time in Bookworm Gardens

The Magic School Bus welcomes young and old alike to fabulous (and free) Bookworm Gardens located just a couple of miles from us near the University of Sheboygan Campus in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. My dear neighbor and her darling daughter accompanied me on a sweet visit last week. The school bus can be "driven" by the children. They can also open and shut the doors, read a copy of the book inside and even look through a kaleidoscope at basket of flowers as the young man in the photo is doing.

Bookworm Gardens was conceived by a local landscape designer and master gardener and is constantly expanding due to a huge contingency of volunteers and community support. More than 25 children's books are illustrated in individual garden settings and thanks to generous individuals, corporations and public service groups, more is being added. Several stone pillars hold copies of laminated books that children can read or parents or volunteers can read to them around the gardens.

They can read Is Your Mama a Llama? in both Spanish and English, and enjoy Jack and the Beanstalk near a metal and natural bean stalk in front of Hansel and Gretel's cottage. The cottage also serves as a visitor's center. My neighbor couldn't resist sitting in Papa Bear's chair. It was vacated by Papa Bear as he and Mama Bear try to coax Baby Bear out of a tree.

So many more books are illustrated that it will take several more visits to experience them all. If you're ever in the area, don't miss Bookworm Gardens!

Finally...a finished bathroom!

I wonder if we are the only people who ever planned a bathroom around a sink. When our old, ugly bathroom (scroll down on this blog for the before pictures) needed remodeling, our dear neighbors gave us a gorgeous Kohler lav to use as a starting point. It is a relatively new product designed by Kohler artists and we were thrilled to receive it.

You can see the completed lav set into a new vanity set. Also there are photos of the bathtub and tile resoration, one of the taping job before the spraying and one of the completed work. There are also two photos of the remodeling process, one of the vanity area, and one of the new floor being installed. Other than dealing with an impatient husband during the three month process, the greatest challenge for me was photgraphing in such a small area. I hope I've done it a little justice!

July Fourth Traditions

As another July fourth has flown past with its parades, picnics and fireworks, I'm amazed at how little our personal traditions have changed. In most ways, I take comfort in these celebrations. It is with gratitude that I enjoy the company of family and dear friends on this joyous occasion. But in another way, with each year's closing fireworks, I reflect on the true sacrifices made by so many others that allow me to have such lovely experiences in such a safe environment. The flashes , bright lights and booming noises that fill the skies seem more and more like battlefields in my mind. And though I continue to enjoy the day, there is also a sadness and longing for a world more at peace. Although I will not see that in my lifetime, it is my sincere hope that those who follow will catch a glimpse of that world.

The Esty Bloggers team asked us to share an item in our shop that reflects Independence Day. The best example I have is in my peacoxtoo shop...a flag afghan with a large yellow ribbon gracing the blue field instead of the stars. It is in honor and memory of those who serve and have served this most blessed nation.

She creates dolls, jewelry, bags, clothing, and much more from largely upcycled fiber materials and offers them in her Etsy shop. She loves the challenge of unusual materials that most of us would not think of combining to form lovely, original design pieces such as these fiber heart charms in shades of pink, white and green. They're 1 1/4" across and have a ring at the back so you can add them to a necklace or bracelet. They would also be darling as a pin on a hat, coat or sweater. Take a few moments to browse her shop; you'll be glad you did!

Summertime...time for smoothies!

Although smoothies are great any time of year, they're a real hit at our house during the summer months, especially for breakfast. So when the Etsy Bloggers asked for summer time recipes, it was a no-brainer! This is a very flexible recipe, so the amounts are approximate. You can add or subtract as you like.

2 cups of yogurt in the flavor of your choice.
1 sliced banana
1 1/2 cups of juice in the flavor of your choice.
1 cup frozen fruit

Blend well and enjoy! This makes about a quart of mixture. Actually, this morning I invited my aerobics class for a smoothie party. We had three choices: mango/peach, strawberry/mixed berry, and vanilla/blueberry. There were no complaints!!

The Great Bathroom Remodel...Part 1

For several years, now, we've needed a bathroom remodel and have finally almost finished the project. Although we were supposed to be finished before Easter, the final date is finally June 16, so I'm glad I waited to blog about the project! Here are some photos of the disaster we were experiencing before the work started. The photos do not do the horrible state of affairs justice, so you'll just have to believe me that I was embarrassed to have guests in it! At any rate, these were shot in April when we could still use it. The true remodel story will start tomorrow!

Memorial Day Parade

We've never been so close to a Memorial Day Parade before! Our little village always has a small parade, but we thought it was scheduled for later in the morning. As we were driving earlier down our main drag, the police pulled us over to the side so that the parade could pass!! Now, you must realize that our parade consists of two squad cars, the high school band, the Girl Scouts and Brownies, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, a Color Guard, three village officials and two fire engines...a total of a five minute parade. Nevertheless, it was an up close and personal experience that exemplifies the true spirit of small town America. God bless the USA!

For as long as I can remember, libraries have been one of the great joys of my life. From my first picture books in the children's section to the stacks of the University Libraries and far beyond, they have enriched my life more that I could have ever imagined. The Etsy Bloggers challenge to write about public libraries has also given me the opportunity to tell about my latest read which, of course is available at your local library. And in a nutshell, run, don't walk to your nearest to your nearest public library to get your hands on The Help by Kathryn Stockett. If you must download it to your electronic device, do it as well! It is a fascinating read that will make you smile, giggle, cry and become angry all at the same time. And it will leave you wanting for more. It's the best book I've read in many years!

Diamonds are forever...

...at least according to James Bond! As we can look forward to April, the month of diamonds, I thought I'd share a different kind of diamond with you: the diamond stitch. Not long ago, a bride contacted me to commission a pine needle basket which will carry the Stefana (Greek wedding crowns) at her approaching wedding. After some research, I found that the number three is important in many Greek ceremonies, including a wedding. The center of the basket begins with two walnut slices tightly joined to symbolize the bride and groom. Then three circles of stitches surround them, two in chain stitches and the center in the diamond stitch so that the sparkle of their love will always be chained together.

After she received the basket, she was gracious enough to send a photo of the basket with the stefana inside. These stefana are especially precious to her as they were worn by her parents as well. I've included her picture as well as one of the basket before it was mailed. I'm thrilled that she is so pleased!

Going green

As the green movement becomes increasingly important in our world, the Etsy Bloggers Team has asked us to tell how we are participating in this vital initiative. In our home we recycle and reuse as much as possible. Hopefully our efforts will help preserve our fragile planet for ages to come.

In my Etsy shop, the pine needle baskets, such as the one shown here, are another example of recycling. All the pine needles used in this art are harvested after they fall and would otherwise have been burned or put in land fills. This 4" pot is an original design and a great example of going green. It was impossible to resist! But it was impossible to find a cow with a cheesehead in a Packer Jersey! We in Packer Nation (aka most of Wisconsin) are always proud of our dairy industry and our green Bay Packers, but today we're udderly full of pride and milking it for all it's worth. Our Pack defeated the Chicago Bears yesterday to earn a place in Superbowl XLV. So on February 6, the Pack will face a very worthy opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers. GO, PACK!!

My Etsy Bloggers Team has asked what business goals we have for 2011 and I'm torn. My first inclination was to say I want to be the "scrubbie queen" of Etsy, but I can't let go of wanting to really promote the pine needle baskets.
Certainly, the nylon net scrubbies are great sellers: they're practical, inexpensive, and kind of cute. You can see two of the apple scrubbies here with a small basket.
But if you check out the second picture, I wonder if you agree with me that the baskets are a greater art form. Even though they are practical, they are pricey, and far fewer folks know about this type of basket.
Which are you more likely to order? Have you tried the scrubbies? Do you know about pine needle art? Any ideas or thoughts would truly be appreciated!

Even in this day of e-cards, instant messaging and photo cards, I still enjoy making my own Christmas cards. So when the Etsy bloggers team asked about holiday traditions, I quickly snapped some pictures of this year's edition. I've been taking a card class with a Stampin' Up dealer, and the ornament punch, border punch, stamps, embossing tools and a series of new colored papers inspired me. They were great fun to make, and I loved making use of the unusual colors for Christmas. Hope the recipients liked them, too!

Scrubbies are always a best seller for my shop, so for Christmas I've designed them in a wreath shape. Once the bow is removed, they serve for all kinds of scrubbie uses, from cleaning pots and pans, to exfoliating heels, to getting bugs off car hoods and windshields. What's also neat about this style is that they can also be used for stocking stuffers or package tie ons, saving on ribbons and bows or for mailing flat packages. Even though I'm a little late in doing so, I still want to thank Divine Designs Jewelry, http://divinedesignsjewelry.etsy.com/ for some fantastic memories. She was the November EtsyBlogger of the month and these exquisite earrings are only one of the lovely items that make her shop so well worth visiting.
But especially precious to me were the memories this particular set have brought me. I had the joy of visiting Santa Fe several times and experiencing its unique culture, architecture, art and lovely people. The Walk Begins

On Saturday, October 31, a group of us participated with "Team Margo" at the track of Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for the American Cancer Society. The four miles were challenging but we were able to finish in less than an hour and a half. Mike McGill, a Road America photographer shot this photo at the starting line...and of course, there I am in the center, talking! The lady who organized the team is right in front of me. She also provided us with pink fleece scarves which were a godsend on the cool, damp morning...Next to me is my friend, Judy, and several other team members are behind us, including Margo, our aerobics teacher (the one waving). Best of all, she is in remission from cancer and we were able to raise a great deal of money for that most worthy cause!

MMM...Mustard!

No, you're not seeing things!! Those are apples to the right. However, the latest Etsy Bloggers Carnival has asked us to tell about a favorite fall activity. We just happened to extend it past the wonderful Lapacek Apple Orchard in Poynette, Wisconsin, where this first shot was taken, to...are you ready for this...the one and only (perhaps thank goodness) National Mustard Museum!!

That's right, folks, inside this seemingly unimposing building lies a true treasure, for you mustardholics that is! It truly spices up the lovely town of Middleton, Wisconsin. Here you can learn about (and sample) hundreds of mustards amidst the "tongue in cheek"...after you stop sampling mustard...displays orchestrated by the museum's official curator.

A good example is a visit to the Poupon U book store where you can gobble up t-shirts, books, and even diplomas! My fav was the "Doctor of Diddly Squat" degree. You can also take mustard quizzes, view more types of mustard than seems possible, and pay a visit to Mustard Piece Theatre to view a film that will have you salivating as you laugh. Not really a pretty picture!!

After exploring and sampling many mustards on such delicacies as mini-hotdogs and pretzels, we made our purchases. We send our thanks to Barry Levinson, the curator (and sometimes preacher) and his staff for a smacking good time.

The Bride Wore Black

On Christmas Eve almost 97 years ago, my grandparents were married in a simple home ceremony. The bride wore black. It was quite a surprise to me the first time I heard it until she explained that it was the custom in her city at the time. Besides, she added, she would wear the dress again.

So it seemed quite natural to me when my husband and I were married four years ago to do the same thing, especially because it was not the first marriage for either of us. We were married in a simple ceremony in our home, by a dear friend, an Episcopalian priest. The bride wore black, of course.

When the topic, weddings, was chosen for the Etsy Bloggers Carnival, it was a story I had to share! The photo above is from our wedding, but as I look just like my grandmother, it was almost a step back to that simpler time, 97 years ago. I guess that happy marriages do not come from the color of the wedding dress....black, white, or any other color!

Apple time!

As I write, the wonderful smell of home made apple sauce is wafting through the house. It is definitely apple time in Wisconsin!

My daughter, son-in-law, husband and I recently toured the Lapacek apple orchard near Poynette, Wisconsin. I snapped this pix on the right of the three of them at the highest point in the orchard while on their "scavenger hunt tour"!

The orchard is a delight from the apple trees in full fruit to the pick-your-own raspberries to the wonderful craft shop. There are great activities for adults and children alike, and you can even meet friendly animals, such as Mac 'n Tosh, the emus pictured below.

But the most fun was meeting Kim and her mother-in-law, absolutely splendid folks! You can see me with my daughter and Kim below, too. Reunion; Sweet Reunion

How swiftly 50 years pass! Last Saturday evening we were fortunate to spend time with more than one hundred of my former classmates for our 5oth high school reunion!

It was a perfect celebration, from the tastefully done table decorations to a wonderful meal and exquisitely planned party. My heartfelt thanks to the organizers of the event, especially my dear friend, Kathy Diehl High, whose superb organizational skills enabled her not only to find every single one of our graduates, but with the help of her sister, produced an updated "yearbook" with delightful autobiographies. They cleverly used the design of our first yearbook (on the left) to produce this memorable new addition (on the right). Incidentally, "WAMAGO" stands for West Allis Maroon and Gold.

Our graduates came from all over the US and it was such fun to catch up on their lives. We all have had great joys and tragedies in our lives; some have remained in West Allis and some have been world travelers; all have made wonderful contributions to their families and their world. One of our members even took pictures of as many of us as he could so he could send digital copies to our former exchange student in Germany!

It was a great honor to see so many of them again. I am so proud to have been a member of the graduating class of 1960 and I wish each of them the best in their golden years. They deserve it!

Back To School

Back to school time was always special in our home, so it is easy to write this post for the Etsy Bloggers Team Carnival with that theme.

My mother taught school and she always made this time fun for me and my sister. Because I was a teacher as well, it was always an exciting time, and now my younger daughter is a third generation educator! To us, the year begins in late August or early September instead of January!

The most precious moment for me at this time of year was taking my older daughter to school for the first time. She was the only child in the class who did not cry, and I was the only mother that did!!

Garden Glory

Saturday, amid the raindrops we had a spectacular experience at the Christopher (of Pampered Chef fame) farm and gardens, just north of Sheboygan, WI, along Lake Michigan. More than 50 acres of the 400 plus farm are devoted to gardens, including a Japanese garden, koi ponds, a fishing pond, par two golf hole, a long arbor of grape vines, and its own railroad complete with crossing, tunnel and station! Plants are largely those that flourish in our area and this lovely property is beautiful in every season. Generally it is not open to the public, but the Christophers invited the public for this special garden walk day. What a treat!

Italy comes to Kohler

It's always been a dream of mine to visit Italy, but it came to us instead! The Italian Experience was celebrated last weekend less than a mile away from us. Italian flags graced the parking lot, sand sculptures had an Italian theme, there were gondola rides on the lake, Ferraris to view, and, of course, many Italian foods to sample. What fun!

Goals in small (and large) steps

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". How often have we heard this adage? Well, I'd like to make a slight change to: "When life gives you dirty dishes, use this lemon-aid"! It's all part of one of my small goals, to sell many more of these dish scrubbies on Etsy. Of course my long term goal is to be the Scrubbie Queen of Etsy, but I learned long ago that most goals are accomplished in small steps, so I thought I'd share that with you as part of an Etsy Bloggers Challenge.

These scrubbies, in various forms, have been part of my family's helpers for years, and recently I designed these in a lemon shape. Many folks I know are kind enough to say these are the best dish scrubbies ever. Not only great in the dishpan, they can be used to clean many surfaces, because not only are they tough, they will not scratch glass surfaces. So go ahead and use them on glass stove tops, bathroom surfaces, or even your windows. A friend of mine love these for Pampered Chef pans and another even uses them to clean her parrot cage! My husband finds them most useful for cleaning the windshield and hood of the car and has recently taken to cleaning golf clubs with them.

They clean up over a peg in the dishwasher or a bag in the washer and air dry in a snap, leaving no odors.

You'll find them in my Etsy shop along with many other styles, including my original apple scrubbies. Certainly some of life's little problems are curable with these "lemon" aids!

New Perennial Garden

My wonderful daughters provided the first perennials for our new backyard garden as a gift for Mother's Day: seven gorgeous columbines, three of which you see here. The garden idea was the result of our adding an addition to the house last winter. Our contractor backfilled around the addition and built us a small raised area shown below.
Today we selected and purchased the rest of the plants and tomorrow is planting day. Because it is a sunny area, we tried to choose flowers with color who love the sun, including black eyed susans, shasta daisies, salvia, blanket flower, and pinks. Check back tomorrow and throughout our summer growing season for for the completed project!

M.........other's Day Camping

For quite a while now, Mother's Day Weekend has always meant camping with my older daughter and son-in-law. Their tent camper is roomy and comfortable. This year will be extra special because my younger daughter and sil will be visiting from Boston, and will join us. It should be extra interesting with our latest weather forecast. I took this picture of the camper last weekend which was gorgeous and warm. This weekend we're slated for rain and cold with possible snow! Good thing it has a heater. Can you say "games" instead of "hiking" and "chili" instead of "hamburgers?" No matter what, we'll have a glorious time!!!

T.........he Gift

On Saturday morning a slim volume arrived in the mail, a gift from a former student. I had known that something was in the works, but the result was one of the most precious gifts I have ever received. It is a copy of the doctoral thesis in philosophy written by a very fine young man that I had the privilege to teach more than 15 years ago. As you can see, the dedication claims that it is partly my fault! However, I'm accepting none of the praise or blame because even the title is daunting: Spacetime Gaps and the Persistence of Objects Through Time. It will take much thought and study on my part to even begin to understand it! He was even so gracious as to mention me in his thank you section. I've always felt that teachers want their students to surpass them and he has truly proved this theory. Thank you, Tom.

H..........appy birthday to all of us!

In response to an Etsy Bloggers Carnival, I began to think in depth about birthdays. Even though I've had 67 of them, I've never really found them to be memorable; not because others haven't made it a joyful event for me, but because they've all been a joy. I guess I am one of the lucky ones who can appreciate every day and every birthday. Besides, I'm happy to have made it this far!

And as all mothers, the birthdays of my two fabulous daughters were much more memorable. But perhaps the most notable birthday of all was my husband's first birthday after we were married. I really wanted to make it special: I had made him a beautiful sweater, I had purchased a new book he had wanted, I had made a special card, and had even baked his favorite carrot cake. If you ask him now, however, he will remember none of these things. What he will remember is that I passed out and he had to call 911! Even though after a quick trip to the hospital proved it was due only to dehydration and a bad sinus infection, that's how he now remembers his birthday!

R.........odent Control

The friend who first introduced me to computers was incredibly patient, but she still got a good laugh over my dealing with the mouse. She just claimed that I had trouble with "rodent control".

Until today, more than 14 years later, I had made great strides with the little critter. Then we purchased a new laptop computer and with its pad, EEK!, it's back to square one! I really want to master this one, so even though I know we can connect our traditional "rodent", we're not going to fall into that "trap".

Guess I'll send her this blog post so she can start laughing again.

Is that really what little boys are made of? I hardly think so, but it does seems that it is easier to find patterns for cute sweaters for baby girls. When I found this pattern, however, it was fun to tailor it to be a little more on the masculine side. I added a brightly colored stripe and made the tie interchangeable in both the cream and bold color. Can't you just see bringing a little guy home from the hospital in one of these?

Even though it's not "officially" spring until next week, I am so ready for it to arrive, and the rain falling now makes me feel it is here. C.........oncerto!

Thanks to some dear friends who gave us tickets to perfect seating, we were treated to a wonderful performance of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra yesterday afternoon. It was an all-Beethoven concert, which we knew would be special, but we had no idea what was in store!

First we attended a most informative presentation by an area musicologist who gave us more insight into the Pastoral Symphony and the Concerto in D Major for violin and orchestra.

The concerto featured a young, Russian violinist, Vadin Repin who absolutely astounded us with his talent. He plays on a violin made in 1736 by Guarneri del Gesu. Even though I'm no expert, it was obvious that he played superbly, and it will be a performance we will long remember.

The concert concluded with the Pastoral Symphony which is certainly more familiar, and we went home humming the themes and most grateful for a spectacular afternoon. Thank you, Joan and Lou!!

First Date

How many of you are familiar with this phrase? Many years ago, rural women sold items to earn money so that they could purchase pins and needles that not only were expensive, but not always easy to come by. We take these items for granted today, but the phrase still means monies we accumulate so that we can buy little "extras" for ourselves.

Because I'm retired, I have the great luxury of looking at my Etsy account for this purpose. I truly admire those Etsians who have great economic success with their shops, but mine is really just for fun. How lucky I am!

Now for the February Experiment analysis. I'm happy to report that I fulfilled the majority of my goals. I relisted, renewed, or listed a new item every day. Most of my shop has been retagged. I was able to blog at least half of the days and introduced a new item, the heavy duty scrubbie. And finally, I was more active with the teams to which I belong. While my first purpose was to find out how this extra activity affected my sales, there turned out to be additional benefits as well. It surprised me that my sales actually fell in February compared to January, but the financial outcome was exactly the same...down to the last dollar! The non-financial benefits were lovely, however. I did more connecting with people than ever, and it is a great feeling. It also made Etsy more exciting than it had been in the past.

Isn't it ironic that what we set out do can take such twists and turns and have benefits of which we never dreamed? And aren't I happy to add each month to my "pin money"?

February Goal Update:

So far, I'm doing well with my February goals. A final update will be given next week. As some of you may remember, one of my goals was to introduce at least one new product. Well, here it is!!

Friends have been testing these new, heavy duty scrubbies and the results have been a resounding thumbs up! They have two layers of netting and for that reason are thicker and sturdier than ever. Just like their cousins, the single ply scrubbies, they have multiple uses: dish scrubbing, pot scrubbing, glass cleaning, wind shield and car hood and grille cleaning, and heel exfoliating to name a few.

They also wash up in the dishwasher or in a bag in the washer and air dry, so they're eco friendly. They're made from nyon netting that is kind to fine dishes and glasses, but tough on stuck on food. They come in a variety of colors. More will be introduced later.

Now here is the best part....a giveaway!! Anyone who follow my blog or elects to follow my blog, can submit a new use for these heavy duty scrubbies. The person we feel comes up with the best use that is not already listed, will receive a set of these!

Each year, to celebrate birthdays of family members and close friends, I try to design a new birthday card that can be made in various colors for them all. This year, using a balloon punch, these "bouquets" of balloons are personalized. One of these is shown below. But the one that to me is most special is the one (to the left) that I made for my great nephew, a Marine serving in Afghanistan. The balloons are punched from camouflage paper and tied with a discreet sheer, gray ribbon. What do you do special for folks who serve in the military?

One of my fellow Etsy Bloggers, Mystic Wynd, inspired me to create in a non-crafting way and blog about it today. You can find her shop at http://mysticwynd.etsy.com/ She is doing a series about our five senses and her post today was about smells. So off to the kitchen I went for some McIntosh apples, a paring knife, cutting board and our slow cooker. In about 20 minutes I had the apples pared, cored and chopped and into the water. After draining the apples, I added 1/4 cup of sugar (which for those of you with greater will power could omit), some cinnamon and 1/4 cup of water.

Then the slow cooking, (on low) began. Within a couple of hours, the most fabulous smell was emanating throughout the house, bringing back so many memories of my mom's and grandma's kitchens. After a couple more hours and a stirring or two, it was ready to make a great warm dessert for dinner.

Why not try some yourself? You won't be disappointed! It doesn't take long, and it's s.........ooo much better than store bought applesauce! Other types of apples, especially baking apples, work well too. This makes 4-6 servings and really doesn't take that much time to make. It's heart healthy as well...especially if you add very little or no sugar.

Bags, bags, bags...from backpacks to wristlets, clutches to totes, the place to shop for them is: TiLT creations, http://tiltcreations.etsy.com I've chosen to show you a mini duffel bag not only sewn and designed by her, but hand painted with a tree of life! The leaves are fabric and sequins which provide just the right touch of "splash". It is 21" long and 5 1/2" in diameter, a perfect size when you want to avoid a large, bulky bag. It would be so easy to carry! Of course I thought of knitting projects. It would hold all kinds of needles! But it would also work for a shopping trip or a quick visit to the gym. You would certainly never see another like it. She also makes use of fabulous, rich fabrics in her designs and just visiting her shop is a treat. F.........ebruary Heart Health (and update)

There's not too much more important to us than our health, and as dh and I age, we realize it more and more and are grateful for our opportunities to stay healthy. One of the Esty Bloggers Carnival topics this month is our health and how we maintain it, so we're looking forward to all the tips. We try to remain active: dh with his golf, gardening and exercise bicycle and I with workouts at least five times a week at our nearby Kohler Sports Core.

Eating healthy has become much easier for us since I started working at an organic farm and bringing home tons of veggies. From early June until late November we are treated to a wide variety of very fresh produce, some of which I weigh and package in exchange for a large box of veggies twice a month. What we can't eat, I try to freeze and we're still enjoying much of summer's goodness. I keep a couple of my dish scrubbies (like those shown above)aside, just to clean them! Our favorite way to enjoy these vegetables is to stir fry them in a bit of olive oil. Almost any combination will do and we never seem to tire of them. Using fresh herbs from the farm helps as well and each time is a new adventure. We wish you all heart health!

The February Experiment continues. Around here it's a great time to revamp my shop and I'm almost half way complete. More updates will follow!

As winter rages on in our part of the country as well as others, it's even more important to keep our little ones warm. This sweet panda afghan was cross stitched on a "canvas" of single crochet so it's extra warm. It also took about twice as long to do, but I think it's worth it. It comes from a pattern by J.A.M.I.

The February Experiment is still going strong. Of course, every time I do one thing a couple more seem to pop up saying, "take care of me next"! It's never boring!

This is the time of year to cuddle up in something warm and dream of summer! One of my favorite afghans allows me to do both. Perhaps my favorite afghan ever is of an afghan called "Grandma's Flower Garden", based on the quilt patterns of the same name. This pattern is particularly dear to me, because my own grandmother had several of these delightful quilts. The "flowers" are actually crocheted motifs...hundreds of them in greens, pinks, orchids and blues which are assembled to form the "garden".

Experiment update: I'm continuing to relist and renew as well as edit the shop. Today was additionally pleasant as I took the time to read and comment on several blogs. I learn so much from other bloggers! And now, it's time to get ready to head downtown for an evening with the local Symphony Orchestra. Tonight they're featuring Brahms, which is always a treat!

Much to my surprise, this little bonnet has been a best seller. I designed it originally to go with a Christening gown, and it's a good thing it was listed separately in my Etsy shop. Several folks have kind enough to buy it to go with a family or antique Christening gown. It's done in fine crochet cotton, and features shells, the symbol of baptism. The ribbon ties make it adjustable.

It was less of a surprise to find it was my first sale in February as well. I'm not sure if it was the result of the February experiment that I'm doing, but it's possible. Yesterday I rewrote and edited almost a quarter of my listings and posted in several forums. This weekend there will be a massive rewrite and editing. Stay tuned for updates the rest of the month!

It seems that more and more young parents are favoring cotton materials for children's' clothing. So for the first time, I've created a baby sweater using a new cotton yarn called Cottontots and I'm most pleased with the results. This white cotton sweater would fit babies from about 6 to 18 months. It's appropriate for Christenings and almost any occasion, because it's completely washable. Experiment update: About one-fourth of my shop listings have been updated and I'm continuing to list and renew every day. It actually feel good to be making progress!

If I could send all of you who are following my blog a personal "Thank You", this is how I would do it! Your comments really keep me going at it.

Day three of my February experiment is well underway. Yesterday I accomplished the following goals: blogged, listed two more items, finished deleting the latest photos, worked on a baby afghan and my new product, edited four shop items, read and commented on several blogs, and posted in all three team forums. DH thought I was glued to the computer, but it gave me a good feeling. Again, my shop got quite a few views and there were more comments than usual on my blog posts. There still have been no February sales, but it's still early in the month.

Today my shop attention will be abbreviated because I have to go out for lunch and play mah jongg this afternoon (poor me, right?) Hope you all have a fulfilling day!

F.........ebruary Experiment: Day 2

Lest you think that the only thing that's going on at our house is Etsy experiments, we thought you might enjoy seeing more of winter in Wisconsin. Last Saturday our village celebrated "A taste of the Alps" along with many winter activities.
One of the highlights was snow sculpture. My fav is shown on the right. It is called "Amadeus: the Requiem" and is about 10' high. Below is a "snow fireplace" (unlit, of course), and the beginnings of a fantastic castle.
You might also note a large open water area in front of the ice skaters being guarded by markers, ropes, and a very frosty guard. This area was for some of our local "polar bears" (or crazies, depending on how you look at it) who took a plunge a little later in the day. Brrrrrrr........!!!!!!!!!
Also featured were dog sled demonstrations, curling demonstrations, children's activities from our local wildlife park, sleigh rides and soup and chili cook-offs with samples! What a great winter activity!

Now back to the Etsy Shop experiment. Yesterday I blogged, listed two items, took about 50 photos, edited half of them, started working on a brand new project, continued working on a WIP (work in progress), edited three shop items and posted in two team forums. This took a total of about five hours. There were no sales, but views were certainly up from the days before. It didn't hurt that I was featured in a treasury as well. Stay tuned for tomorrow's update!

You are invited to celebrate the month of February with me as I show a little love to my Etsy shop with an experiment. Although my sales were OK in January, I'd like to see those figures improve and know there are things I can be doing to promo Peacox Creations. I'd be delighted if you would follow along with me as I try these techniques:

1. Blog every day with an update on what I did the day before.

2. List or renew at least two items every day.

3. Take new photos and edit them at least once a week, even though I know on this old, slow computer, that will be a challenge.

4. Introduce at least one completely new product.

5. Edit the present items in my shop with better tags, titles an descriptions.

6. Be active with at least one team I'm on a day, posting in the team forums, reading others' blogs, or perhaps making treasuries.

There must have been a method to my madness for choosing the shortest month of the year!

One of the new items I'm posting today is this set of crocheted cotton dishcloths/facecloths knit from a yarn that makes its own stripes. They arrive tied with a matching ribbon, so they are quickly ready to tuck in a gift, or untie for immediate use!

Winter is a perfect time for crafting here in Wisconsin, and this year is better than ever because our new kitchen, which includes a craft area for me, was finished on January 14, exactly three months from the day they began to dig for the addition. When one of the bloggers' carnivals asked about our winter past times, I could not resist showing off the new area. The east wall of the new room is designed to give me lots of space for card making, packaging and storing completed projects, as well as some supplies. It even doubles as a bookkeeping area for David! Already, it is a great blessing for us.

The first picture shows that wonderful new area and the second and third photos show more of the whole kitchen area. The entire back wall of the house, which ended right where the island is now, was removed and even though the addition is only about 175 square feet, the entire ground floor of the house seems so much larger and brighter. Even the cats enjoy their perch in front of a sunny, south window.

The old, tiny kitchen is now a powder room, hallway and laundry area. It is certainly the best kitchen I have ever had and I am so grateful for it. If anyone is in the area, please pop over to see us.
There probably will be more fresh baked goods than ever, and the coffee pot is always on!

"Wake up, honey; it's a Raisin Bran Morning!" I groan; not because I've been wakened from a sound sleep, not because it's 5:45 am, not even because I can hear the north wind howling, but because "Raisin Bran" is a code, a code that means, "We've had so much snow that to get down to pavement, you will need to take at least 'two scoops' with the shovel!"

So I grudgingly force myself to leave the soft, warm comforter and splash my face with cold water to prepare myself for the first task of the day...getting dressed. Complete with long underwear, heavy socks, heavy jeans and sweatshirt, I waddle down the stairs, a la The Michelin Man. There I add boots, an extra heavy jacket, my warmest hat (the one that makes me look like a character out of the pages of a Dr. Seuss book), tie a scarf around it and my neck, and pull on my warmest mittens. All set! Oops, you guessed it; I have to go to the bathroom! So almost everything has to come off and then be re donned for the occasion.

Now it's dawn and out I go with my handy, dandy shovel to do my part of the daunting task: the front porch and walk. Meanwhile, my dear husband, who was responsible for reveille this morning, is already hard at work on the back porch with his shovel, and then the long driveway with his snowblower. About an hour later, we're both back in the house ready for a huge breakfast and a nap. That's right, our "two scoop" morning, has turned into a two nap day! Isn't retirement in Wisconsin wonderful?

M.........aking progress!

Despite several weather delays (a very rainy October) and a recent blizzard), progress is being made on our addition. We estimate that it will be mostly done by Christmas, but I'm not holding my breath!
These are shots of the exterior work; interior shots will follow in the near future. The masons are shown laying the block in the first picture which also shows a very clever yellow contraption that made sure everything was level. The next picture is of the addition of sand and earth around the masonry.
The next pictures show our contractor removing bricks from the back and roughing out the walls. The final shot is of the addition from the back, ready to have the windows put in and the siding applied.

Needless to say, we continue to be very excited about this project, despite the mess we're living in. Of course that gives me an excuse not to cook or clean!

One of the topics for the Etsy Blogger's Team monthly carnival, is Christmas in other parts of the world. I've had the privilege to spend much time in Mexico, including over the Christmas holiday, and have so enjoyed the spirit of Christmas there as well.

Christmas itself is a very holy day beginning with midnight mass followed by a large family meal. Although more and more Mexicans are exchanging gifts on Christmas, many families give their children gifts on January 6th, the day of the Three Kings, instead. To me that makes much more sense as they are commemorating the traditional day that the Magi presented the first "Christmas Presents" to the Christ Child.

Their are many other festivities around Christmas such as the Posadas that celebrate the nine days it took Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem. So, it seems that Christmas runs for almost a month!

Perhaps your family would like to celebrate the holidays with a pinata, such as the very clever lollipop that I found here on Etsy by Birchangel. Search "pinatas" here on Etsy to enjoy many others...it was hard to choose one!

T.........ime for Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving for me has always been about family. As in many homes, my mom was always the center of that family. This year, we are particularly grateful, as our 95 year old mother is making a recovery from some serious falls and a relatively long hospital stay. She's pictured here a couple of years ago with her first great, great grandchild. She continues to bless us with her spirit and caring so this Thanksgiving will be extra special!

Two of our friends are known for their creativity and sense of humor. At no time of the year is that so apparent as Halloween when they create their new costumes. This year they've outdone themselves and decided that this would also be the picture on their Christmas card, (I think they may have a different sentiment on that card than their present "theme") and we were invited to take the pictures. You'll see them in full regalia to the right. With the help of the manager at our local JoAnn's store, they whipped these up much more quickly than you would imagine.

Then they insisted that I try on the mustard costume, so I'm in the second picture. DH insisted that he couldn't put on the ketchup outfit because he had to hold the camera....right....sure!

We're tempted to send these photos on to the Mustard Museum right here in Wisconsin. The "curator" there has a great sense of humor as well.

The photo shoot was done with much quipping and laughter, especially when the wind adjusted the mustard costume and their was some reference to Mustard Gas.

We feel blessed and certainly happy to have these dear friends!

Halloween has always been one of my favorite times of year. It is, for the most part, a light-hearted, even humorous holiday, and I find it inspires universal creativity. So when the Etsy Bloggers Carnival suggested telling about Halloween at our house, I thought I'd show one of my greeting cards, an original design, just for this occasion. Here I made use of inky black silhouette paper for the carved pumpkin, with a base of other colorful jack-o-lanterns. My favorite part is the little spider hanging in the upper right hand corner. Hope you receive many cards, treats and a few chuckles this year!

Bang!! Bang!!! Bang!!!! I jumped about three feet at 7:30 am. I knew that construction workers had arrived but didn't know they needed to take a sledge hammer to the bricks on back of the house that soon. Our new kitchen had begun! After I had picked myself up, we ran out to see the first steps which included ther use of some very large and interesting machines. How they maneuvered that power shovel in such a small space was amazing and here you can see the first scoop and the finished trench. The last photo is of the workers beginning to frame up for the footings. The only glitches were a few unusual pipes that came up during the dig, which had long been out of use. Will the new kitchen/crafting area be done by Christmas? Stay tuned for more construction updates!

Although my sister and I have always been close, distance makes it hard to get together as often as we would like. So I was thrilled when she invited me to her house for a few days to help her assemble a scrapbook of pictures from her retirement party. We had a great time laughing and cropping and laying out pages and you can see us with the results to the left. She's the younger, prettier one! Now we not only have memories of the party, but the joyful memories of making the book. Thank you, Jeannie, for this opportunity and for being my sister!
